iPhone Duo Unlocked vs Carrier: Which Should You Buy?
An unlocked iPhone Duo offers more carrier flexibility, while a carrier purchase may provide installment or promotional options. Locking depends on where and how you pay—not on the fact that iPhone Duo uses eSIM.
iPhone Duo Unlocked at a Glance
- Apple paid in full: Unlocked
- Apple Card Monthly Installments: Unlocked
- Apple Upgrade lease: Apple lists it among its unlocked buying methods

Where Can You Buy an Unlocked iPhone Duo?
Apple says an iPhone purchased by paying in full, using an Apple financing option, or leasing through Apple Upgrade is unlocked. Buyers who do not want to connect during checkout can choose “Connect to any carrier later” where that option is offered.
The checked Best Buy Duo listings are carrier-specific AT&T and Verizon SKUs. No current first-party Best Buy iPhone Duo SKU was verified as an unlocked model, so this guide does not label Best Buy's Duo inventory unlocked.
Apple Unlocked vs Carrier-Financed iPhone Duo
Apple states that paying in full or using Apple financing results in an unlocked iPhone. Apple also says an iPhone financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program is locked to that carrier until paid in full.

AT&T Unlock Rules
AT&T says the device must have been purchased more than 60 days ago, be paid in full, not be active on another AT&T account, and not be reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud. A current customer's bill cannot be past due. AT&T Prepaid phones require 12 months of service.
T-Mobile Unlock Rules
T-Mobile requires the device to have been sold or authorized by T-Mobile, not be blocked, and be attached to an account in good standing. Postpaid devices must be active on the requesting line for at least 40 days and any financing or lease payments must be satisfied. Eligible remotely unlockable devices are unlocked automatically within two business days.
T-Mobile's prepaid policy generally uses a 365-day activation period, with a separate refill-based path and other limits for some devices activated more recently.
Verizon Unlock Rules
Verizon's current standard monthly policy says devices purchased directly from Verizon are locked and automatically unlock after a full-retail purchase or after the financing balance is paid in full. A secure payment method is required for an immediate unlock; some payment methods can trigger a 35-day security hold.
For a Verizon Prepaid device purchased on or after January 27, 2026, Verizon lists two separate requirements before a customer may request an unlock: the device must have been locked for 365 days from the purchase date, and the customer must have completed 12 months of paid service. Suspended days do not count toward the 365-day period.
Verizon will not unlock a device flagged for fraud or reported lost or stolen, even if the other eligibility conditions—including full payment for a standard monthly device—have been satisfied.
How to Check Whether iPhone Duo Is Unlocked
Apple says to open Settings → General → About and look atCarrier Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions”, the iPhone is unlocked. Apple cannot unlock a carrier-locked iPhone; only the current carrier can complete that process.
Unlocked vs Carrier: Pros and Cons
Unlocked purchase
- More freedom to change compatible carriers without waiting for a device payoff.
- Useful when comparing service or adding supported travel eSIM plans.
- May not include the carrier promotion a buyer values most.
Carrier purchase
- May offer carrier installments or future verified promotions.
- Can remain locked until payoff and policy requirements are satisfied.
- Credits or service commitments can make switching more complicated.
Who Should Buy Unlocked?
An unlocked purchase is usually the clearer fit for buyers who expect to switch compatible carriers, travel with supported eSIM plans, or avoid tying device eligibility to a carrier payoff schedule.
Who Might Prefer a Carrier Purchase?
A carrier purchase may fit someone who values a specific installment plan or a verified promotion enough to accept its lock, payoff, service, and credit requirements. Compare current terms in the deals tracker.
